Professor Don Johnson's distinguished journey in electrical engineering began at MIT, where he earned his B.S. and M.S. in 1970, his E.E. in 1971, and his Ph.D. in 1974. Following his studies, he joined MIT Lincoln Laboratory, where he contributed to groundbreaking advancements in digital speech systems. In 1977, he brought his expertise and passion for teaching to Rice University, joining the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department faculty.
Throughout his career, Professor Johnson has made an enduring impact as a teacher, innovator, and mentor. Now the J.S. Abercrombie Professor Emeritus of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Professor Emeritus in Statistics, he is celebrated for his commitment to education. He has received numerous teaching awards at both MIT and Rice, including Rice’s George R. Brown Award for Excellence in Teaching and four George R. Brown Superior Teaching Awards.
A pioneering leader in his field, Professor Johnson co-founded Modulus Technologies, Inc., served as President of IEEE’s Signal Processing Society, and was recognized with both the Meritorious Service Award and the Distinguished Lecturer title. He is also a Life Fellow of the IEEE, underscoring his lasting contributions to signal processing and engineering education.
