Rice University’s Theta Rho chapter of Eta Kappa Nu (HKN), the international honor society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), welcomed its newest members during an induction ceremony held March 25, 2026.
Held at the Ralph S. O’Connor Building for Engineering and Science on Rice’s campus, the annual event brought together students, faculty and chapter leadership to recognize juniors and seniors in electrical and computer engineering for distinguished scholarship, leadership and character - hallmarks of IEEE-HKN membership.
Founded in 1904, IEEE-HKN has grown to more than 200 chapters worldwide. At Rice, the Theta Rho chapter plays an important role in supporting professional development, mentorship and service within the electrical and computer engineering community.
During the ceremony, faculty and student leaders reflected on HKN’s mission to encourage excellence in education and honor those who have contributed meaningfully to the engineering profession.
Seven senior students were inducted into the honor society:
Elliot Chae, Max Kuhlman, Ken Li, Elaine Ren, Giovanna Veras, Gabriel Witkop, Kaan Yilmaz
In addition, thirteen junior students were recognized for induction:
Nathan Cao, Harvey Chen, Katherine Han, Gerald Lu, Cindy Nguyen, Jack Pinkert,Cassandra Pringle, Rocky Ren, Hong-Jyun Wang, Kerry Xu, Ivana Zak, Oscar Zhang, Harry Zhu
Membership in Eta Kappa Nu is one of the highest academic honors for undergraduate students in electrical and computer engineering, reserved for those who demonstrate not only academic excellence but also integrity, leadership and a commitment to service.
The induction marks a milestone in each student’s academic journey and connects them to join a global network of engineers and innovators. Through HKN, members gain opportunities for leadership, professional growth and continued engagement in a community dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of society.
